While Angkor Wat is famous for its massive scale and royal origins, Banteay Srei stands out for its intimate size and intricate details. Located 25 km from the main Angkor group, it requires a separate trip but rewards visitors with some of the best-preserved carvings in Cambodia. Here is a breakdown of how the two temples compare.
How do the temple sizes compare?
Banteay Srei is a small-scale monument, often described as miniature, while Angkor Wat is a massive temple complex.
Angkor Wat was designed to dominate the landscape and hold thousands of people. Banteay Srei, by contrast, feels like a "jewel box." The doorways of its central sanctuaries are famously low. This smaller scale allows you to easily see the architectural details up close.
What materials were used for construction?
Banteay Srei was built primarily from a hard pink sandstone, unlike the softer gray sandstone used for Angkor Wat.
This pink sandstone is unique in the Angkor region. Because the stone is exceptionally hard, it allowed sculptors to create deep, three-dimensional carvings. These carvings remain crisp and highly detailed today, resembling fine woodcarving rather than stone masonry.

Who built Banteay Srei compared to Angkor Wat?
A high dignitary and Brahmin scholar founded Banteay Srei, whereas a reigning king ordered the construction of Angkor Wat.
It is very unusual for an Angkorian temple of this quality to be commissioned by someone other than a king. Banteay Srei was dedicated in 967 AD by a scholar named Yajnavaraha. Angkor Wat was built over a century later by King Suryavarman II.
What is the travel distance between them?
Banteay Srei is located about 25 km (16 miles) northeast of Angkor Wat.
Because it is located outside the main Angkor Archaeological Park grouping, reaching Banteay Srei requires dedicated transport. Travel time from Siem Reap (near Angkor Wat) takes 45 to 60 minutes by car or tuk-tuk.

How does the required visit time differ?
You need about 1.5 to 2 hours to visit Banteay Srei, while Angkor Wat often takes a half-day or more.
Because Banteay Srei is small, you can see all the enclosures and carvings relatively quickly. Many visitors combine Banteay Srei with other outer temples or a trip to Kulen Mountain to fill a half-day or full-day itinerary.

Do you need a different ticket for Banteay Srei?
No, both temples require the same Angkor Pass for entry.
The standard Angkor Pass ($37 for 1 day) covers admission to both sites. There are no single-temple tickets available. You must purchase your pass from Angkor Enterprise before arriving at Banteay Srei, as tickets are not sold at the temple gate.

Questions travellers ask
