The Inner Enclosures and Sanctuaries

The heart of Banteay Srei contains its main shrines and stone libraries. This area features the most exceptionally preserved pink sandstone carvings in the complex.

Constructed from a distinctly hard pink sandstone, this central area allows for crisp, deep carvings. These details remain intact over a thousand years after the temple's dedication in 967 AD. You will need about 50 minutes to properly view the three central sanctuaries and the narrative bas-reliefs.

Remember that strict dress codes apply here. Ensure your shoulders and knees stay covered while exploring the inner enclosures.

Central Sanctuaries (Prasats)

15 minutesZoom lens useful

Three miniature tower-shaped shrines originally housed images of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. These shrines highlight the delicate scale of the 10th-century monument. The structures are roped off to protect the ancient stone. Bring a camera with a good zoom lens to clearly see the devatas and guardians.

The Northern and Southern Libraries

15 minutesNarrative bas-reliefs

Two heavily decorated stone buildings flank the central sanctuaries. Built to hold sacred manuscripts, they feature famous narrative bas-reliefs. Look at the pediment on the right library. It depicts the burning of the Khandava forest, a famous scene from the Mahabharata.

Inner Carvings and Bas-Reliefs

20 minutesBest light early or late

Deep, three-dimensional carvings cover nearly every surface of the inner enclosure. The uniquely hard pink sandstone allowed sculptors to create woodcarving-like details. Visit early in the morning or late afternoon. The low sun casts shadows that emphasize the deep cuts in the pink stone.
